Joe’s daily coffee route.
Joe
Halford
Walk for Joe is an annual
fundraising event in memory of Joe Halford.
Joe died in November of 2007 from a pedestrian/car accident. He was the “man with the coffee cup”, walking
all over Yakima making friends.
Joe was 55 years old
and developmentally disabled. However,
with the support of Community Living, Joe lived independently for 26
years. Community Living is a non-profit
agency providing residential support to adults with developmental
disabilities. Joe’s mother, Carolyn
Halford, was one of the founding parents of Community Living. His sister, Ruth Ann Halford, currently a
member of Community Living’s Board, initiated this event in honor and
remembrance of her brother.
Where will the money go?
100% of the money
raised from this event goes to “The Association For Community Living” to
provide safe and affordable housing for adults with developmental disabilities.
Community Living,
formerly Spring Acres Group Homes, is a private non-profit agency created in
1969 by a handful of Yakima parents.
In 1979, the Board
voted to sell all but one of its existing traditional group homes and
implemented the State’s first “pilot program” to serve people with
developmental disabilities in their own homes (i.e., apartments, houses,
mobile homes, etc.) located throughout Yakima.
Community Living has received National and International recognition for
this program model.
Community Living
currently serves 125 individuals, of which, 45 reside in Yakima, 21 in
Sunnyside, 31 in Bellevue and 28 in Kent.
Services are provided
based on the needs and wants of the individual and staff support may range from
as little as one hour a day to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We support individuals with many types of
disabilities including mental retardation, autism, medically fragile, mental
illness, challenging behaviors, blind, deaf, cerebral palsy, and traumatic
brain injury. Individuals are supported
in both apartments and houses.
Registration Fee $15 per person ($5 for
employees, their families and clients)
